The gall bladder is a small, pear-shaped sac next to the liver. The liver is a gland that manufactures bile, or gall, and the gall bladder is used to store some of this until it is needed. Most of it is excreted, but since it is used for digestion, there must be some bile in the body, and the gall bladder is its storehouse. Bile passes from the liver through the hepatic duct, which is a small tube from the liver to the gall bladder. Sometimes, the bile becomes more concentrated than it should, and the chemicals in it become solidified, and this is how gallstones are formed. Gallstones can block the tubes leading in and out of the gall bladder, and they often require surgery to correct.
